Garvetagh

Garvetagh Branch Club was opened in Castlederg Orange Hall on 23rd February 1918. Bro Robert McCarter was President of The Parent Club presiding.

The following are the 13 who were initiated in Derry on 18th December 1917 to form The Garvetagh Branch Club and whose name is on the Charter: Thomas Simpson, Matthew Dunbar, John Wauchop, Joseph Glass, Oliver Campbell, Robert Forsythe, John S. Simpson, Edward Montgomery, Robert McCain, James Monteith, Samuel Condy, Thomas Mortland & James Bogle.

Bro Matthew Dunbar who was 70 years of age on 1st May 1953 and was one of the thirteen who were initiated in Londonderry on 18th December 1917 held the office of Vice President from 1918 – 1924. He took over the office of Treasurer in 1925 and held it for over 27 years. He was initiated in 1917 and he attended all demonstrations and only missed twice up to 1954.

As well as fighting for King and Country in the War, Garvetagh lost 3 Brethren to hands of terrorists.
